About Erin
Erin Fletcher was introduced to the craft of bookbinding under the instruction of Susannah Kite Strang during her studies at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She experimented with a variety of simple book structures, pushing the concept of the book as an art form. This initial exposure to bookbinding created a desire to culture a deeper understanding of the craft.

In 2010, Erin moved to Boston to attend the full-time bookbinding program at the North Bennet Street School. She received training in both historical and contemporary bookbinding techniques from early codex structures to case bindings to fine leatherwork from Jeff Altepeter. Additional training was delivered by Martha Kearsley in basic book and paper conservation.

Erin has settled into Boston with her husband, Jason and two cats. She works in a shared bindery space with Colin Urbina at Third Year Studio, located in the Fort Point neighborhood of South Boston.

In 2012, Erin opened Herringbone Bindery, providing hand bookbinding, box-making and basic conservation for various clients and institutions.




The Bindery
At Herringbone Bindery, I combine my education in bookbinding with a background in art to craft unique objects satisfying the client's ideas and concerns. Each commission will be approached with thoughtful research and planning in order to provide an efficient service in regards to time, materials and cost.

At present the profession of a Bookbinder is uncommon, but one with a long history. I believe in working with traditional techniques and materials, while engaging new ideas and skills to craft quality products. I also see the importance in promoting the history of bookbinding by educating my clients; aiding their understanding for service fees and assembly timeframes.

The bindery is fully equipped with ample space for large format projects. Herringbone Bindery offers a wide range of bookbinding services from one-of-kind handcrafted items to multiple editions, which could include albums, portfolio cases, boxes and books with or without content. The bindery is equipped to also offer basic conservation, which includes book repair and paper repair.
