  1. Around Town: Illuminated Geographies at Tufts’ Tisch Gallery

January 20, 2013 by Erin Fletcher

An opening reception will take place on January 24th from 5:30 – 8:00 pm for the exhibition Illuminated Geographies at the Tisch Gallery inside Tufts University. Illuminated Geographies explores the evolution of Pakistani miniaturist painting through four contemporary artists. The practice of Mughal miniature painting dates back to the 16th century and reemerged in the 1980s at the National College of Arts in Lahore, Pakistan, where one can study the practice of wasli paper- and brush-making techniques, paint mixing, narrative style, and iconography.

The show will exhibit four artists who trained at NCA and whose work is pushing the boundaries of this antiquated art form by addressing the cultural realities between Pakistan and their present locations. The work of Murad Khan Mumtaz will be on display, whom I’ve mentioned before on the blog. As well as the work of Saira Wasim, Faiza Butt and Boston-based artist Ambreen Butt.
