It has been in the 50s for the past two days in Boston, which means the heavy, gray veil of winter is slowly lifting and spring is on the horizon. Spring time reminds me of the colors forgotten during the dreary months of white snow and grey clouds, which in turn reminds me about flowers and the gorgeous floral paintings of artist Lulie Wallace.

Artist: Justyn Hegreberg
February 12, 2014 by Erin Fletcher
I love art that can exist as just a beautiful object, no need to crowd the frame with tons of conceptual nonsense. The attractiveness of Justyn Hegreberg’s artwork grabs me through the varied textures, bold colors and asymmetric formats. He both thinks and works outside the frame (even though sometime the piece doesn’t quite stretch to all four sides).

Artist: Tim Wirth
January 9, 2014 by Erin Fletcher
Tim Wirth has really streamlined his artistic process. Each painting is created on a square birch canvas that is cut down from a larger plank, leaving no waste. The paintings are framed and the backside includes the date and place where the painting was completed, as well as the title and signature. Many of the painting’s backsides include a painting of their own.
I like Tim’s work because it’s humorous, non-sensical at times and colorful. It’s that plain and simple.

These miniature paintings from Lisa Nilsson are packed with incredible detail and life. Each painting acts as a memory from various trips to the beach at Lake Wentworth or ice fishing at Lake Griffy, a cosmetology school, the fish market and the Cleveland Zoo.

Artist: Lilli Carré
June 6, 2013 by Erin Fletcher
I’ve been a fan of Lilli Carré’s style of illustration ever since I purchased her 2008 graphic novel The Lagoon. However, in this post I would like to feature these lovely detailed pieces from Lilli’s Debris Paintings series. A mix of abstract shapes, lines, and dots, these paintings remind me of the work of bookbinder Edgar Mansfield.

Artist: Andrea Shear

My husband and I recently took up watercolor as a hobby. Jason has been creating these imaginative and celestial pieces by layering pigment on his ink drawings. I, on the other hand, am still trying to figure out how to paint with watercolors. However, Andrea Shear is quite talented with watercolor. She has a real eye for layering color creating depth in shadows and highlights.

Artist: Lori Larusso

The work of Lori Larusso is a bit peculiar, as are her choices of restricting the viewer. Lori isolates a space which accentuates the angles and guides our eyes to more unusual focal points.

Artist: Chelsey Pettyjohn

Over at Hideous Things. you will find things that are not so hideous. The artwork of Chelsey Pettyjohn may not seem beautiful to everyone, but I find a certain attraction to her heavy brushstrokes and thick application of paint. The unusual color choices for skin tone are intriguing and the coarse stare of her characters are perfect in her Commandments series.

Rachel Levit is another artist recently featured on Buy Some Damn Art. Her work varies in style across different mediums from painting to illustration to digital. The soft faces of her characters cast a poetic gaze onto the viewer under the stroke of a brush.
