In her Spring/Summer 2012 collection Hybrid, designer Natalia Grzybowski re-defines our visual interpretation of the ‘female cyber-organism’ combining natural, synthetic and technological elements to create a hybrid female body: part human, part botanic. Using minimalist silhouettes with soft angles inspired by flower structures in order to flatter the feminine shape without over sexualizing it; the garments are then printed with enhanced historical botanical imagery.

Chris Benz :: Spring 2013
October 9, 2012 by Erin Fletcher
This season’s Spring 2013 collection by Chris Benz combine influences from the macabre and a zombie apocalypse. “I wanted it to be pretty in an off-putting way”, says Benz. These influences translated into eccentric layered outfits combining floral dresses over denim, paillette crocheted jackets over embossed fabrics, and scattered throughout are chunky sweaters tied around the waist. The concept of more-is-more suits the overall design of Benz’s collection.

Marc Jacobs :: Resort 2013
October 2, 2012 by Erin Fletcher
Marc Jacobs is by far my favorite designer, surprising me season after season. Using Cindy Sherman’s Clown Series as a platform, the 2013 Resort collection incorporates oversized costume-like garments decorated by either oversized or shrunken patterns in a vivid range of colors: polka dots paired with plaids, folk florals, carnations, butterflies and lace.

Swash London :: AW 2012
September 25, 2012 by Erin Fletcher
This Autumn collection of scarves reminds me of two things: the soft effect achieved through drawing with colored pencils and the scarf collection my Mother owned in the early 90’s which were patterned with large gold chains. Bringing together images of fall and wildlife with clock mechanics and metal armor, Swash London’s AW 2012 collection harmonizes a range of colors (from pastels to fire reds and royal purples) to draped fabrics, form fitting garments and patterned tights. On top of everything are the wonderful selections of hats from the Balmoral bonnet to an equestrian style helmet fitted with a pompom.

Antoni and Alison :: S/S 2013
September 15, 2012 by Erin Fletcher
Do you remember art class from Kindergarten? Free from all inhibitions, armed with glitter, sequence, paint, markers and a blank sheet of paper. Every garment in Antoni and Alison’s S/S 2013 collection showcases a bold and unruly application of color combined with large-scale patterns and over the top embellishments freely scattered amongst the cloth.

Thakoon :: Pre-Spring 2013
September 5, 2012 by Erin Fletcher
Thakoon takes the cake in their Pre-Spring 2013 collection; inspired by frosting and sorbet colors like pistachio, mint and bubble gum pink. Mixing little kick skirts, mixed-media tops and cinch-waist dresses with intricate fabrics and a few floral prints; basket-weave linen with candy-colored stripes and textured jacquarded organza. The angular shape of the V-necks and backs on top of the diamond motifs cut through the sweet offering a bit contrast to these feminine garments.

Peter Som :: Resort 2013
August 20, 2012 by Erin Fletcher
Sophistication and elegance are the two descriptors that came to mind with I first laid eyes on this slim T-shirt gown cut from mint Chantilly lace, a highlight of the Resort 2013 collection from Peter Som. This new collection is a described as “nomad chic, with a Talitha Getty sort of feeling” with inspiration also coming in from Moorish doors and Moroccan tiles.

Sabine Ducasse :: Melting Pot Collection
August 17, 2012 by Erin Fletcher
Perler beads are back in way one would not expect. Sabine Ducasse’s Melting Pot Collection transforms this simple craft material into a psychedelic pixelated “winged” capelet. Her collection won her a scholarship at the International Fashion Academy whose competition “East Meets West” was successfully demonstrated through the shapes, fabrics and simple genius of Sabine’s collection.
