  1. Artist: Tara Marynowsky

December 12, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

Tara Marynowsky paints life into her characters through an attentive detail to colors and shapes, yet their simple, fuzzy expressions are quite haunting. Aesthetically Tara’s watercolor paintings remind me of the artist, Marcel Dzama, yet the perplexity of her work arouse feelings of restlessness.

  2. Artist: Michelle Blade

December 6, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

I understand the dedication that goes into a 365 project, artist Michelle Blade is currently working on such a project that will finish at the end of this year. In her project 366 days (2012 is a leap year), Blade explores the apocalyptic prophecies imposing on the year 2012. Her paintings are ethereal, emitting a range of emotions from despondency to togetherness.

  3. Artists: APAK

December 5, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

Welcome to the wonderful world of APAK Studio, a creative collaboration between husband and wife, Aaron and Ayumi Piland. Using gouache and acrylic, this duo paints a lush utopia filled with curious little creatures exploring the magic and mystery of life and love.

  4. Artist: Allison Schulnik

November 29, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

Allison Schulnik paints a cast of ghoulish characters throughout her body of work, mainly noseless with sunken eye sockets. Her heavily painted canvases employ a range of depth and subtle detail. The paintings of American magic realist, Ivan Albright, came to mind when I saw Allison’s work. Both playing on the theme of macabre, blending fantastical elements with the real world.

  5. Artist: Jeff Depner

November 22, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

In this ongoing series Reconfigured Grid from painter Jeff Depner, he well reconfigures the grid forming new shapes pointing your eye in every direction. Layering and pairing colors to trick the eye; his work inspires a modern twist on Bauhaus artist Josef Albers.

  6. Artist: Brendan Monroe

November 15, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

Brendan Monroe paints his vision of our world with inspirations rooted in science. The quality of his painting reminds me a lot of contemporary marbling with the thick wave-like lines. I really love his little sculptures, especially the dude made up of dried paint scraps. Brendan offers a small collection of zines from his shop. I just ordered copies of IslandsIslands N. 2, and Between Here and Here; I can’t for them to arrive!

  7. Artist: Miranda Skoczek

November 8, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

I love these wildly abstract paintings by artist Miranda Skoczek, it might be the unleashed movement of color or the combination of realistic fauna and vibrant geometric shapes.

  8. Artist: Ky Anderson

November 7, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

These amazing paintings from Ky Anderson appear as abstract landscapes under siege from the elements: wind gusts, rainfall and looming triangular shapes.

  9. Artist: Jen Garrido

November 1, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

So simple are these pieces by artist Jen Garrido yet they remind of me old, weathered architectural structures bent and warped from old age.

And these pieces are just beautiful, revealing stellar-like universes behind a clouded atmosphere.

  10. Artist: Mia Christopher

October 31, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

Who says nail polish is just for dressing up your digits. Mia Christopher uses non-traditional pigments like nail polish and latex with traditional ones such as watercolors and gouaches to create these extravagant textural pieces.  Plus we get to peek inside her sketchbook.
