The recent artist featured on Buy Some Damn Art is painter Amanda Brazier. She has sold 4 out of 6 pieces already, which comes as no surprise because Amanda’s work is brilliant and beautiful. She respectfully grinds her own paints using earth pigments from her home in Chattanooga, Tennessee and locations in North Carolina. Amanda collects red, yellow, brown and sometimes purple pigments from the earth, creating a warm and welcoming color palette. Check out her interview at Buy Some Damn Art.

Artist: Klari Reis
March 13, 2013 by Erin Fletcher
For the longest time, I’ve been awed by the cellular growth in petri dishes. The cultures are so visually stunning and colorful and I’ve often wanted to replicate the patterns and textures through embroidery.
So naturally, I was excited to see this work by artist Klari Reis, who has created these wonderful paintings using reflective epoxy polymer inside plexiglass petri dishes. Klari installs her work in clusters of 30, 60 and 150.

Photographer: Ignacio Torres

As if the theory that our bodies are made from celestial dust isn’t poetic enough, photographer Ignacio Torres has created an equally enchanting series of GIFs under the title Stellar. Using dust and reflective confetti, Ignacio captures a galaxy in motion as his subjects appear frozen in time.

Artist: Alan Brown of Medusa Wolf
March 6, 2013 by Erin Fletcher
Jason and I are just tickled by the work of Alan Brown of Medusa Wolf. Every year for our anniversary we love to add a piece of original art to our collection. I think we’ve already made a decision for this year, but I’m not sure if we can wait until September. How can you resist two macho dudes spouting sentiments!

Artist: Marina Muun
March 6, 2013 by Erin Fletcher
Marina Muun states that she is inspired by the natural, unnatural and supernatural; a perfect combination that spawns into delightful works of art. I am particularly fond of the piece above, Departure. Not only becuase it reminds me of the Mook creature from My Grey Sky, but Marina captures death in such a poetic manner. The life slowly unraveling from the body.
But she swept my heart with her work Collecting, a simple artist book with a series of painted vitrines.

Horses have long been viewed as majestic creatures. Slap on hair extensions and add some braids or curls they escalate to glamorous. Photographer Julian Wolkenstein has created these magnificent portraits highlighting our projections on animals. If you need another dose of animals in flashy tresses, check out Glamour Puss: a collection of kitty wigs.

Sir Lizard Threw a Party.
February 27, 2013 by Erin Fletcher
For Christmas last year, Jason got me a subscription to Ugly Duckling Presse, a Brooklyn-based publishing organization that produces trade editions for artists. Today, after a gloomy rainy day, (I got caught in the downfall twice and my umbrella fell victim to the gusty winds) I came home to a very welcoming package in the mail: the latest 6×6 issue from UDP. I can’t wait to dive into the poetry during tomorrow’s train ride into the bindery!

I love this ongoing instagram series from photographer Amanda Jasnowski where she captures a daily portrait of her hand. Our hands can lead an interesting life if we just take a moment to study their actions.

Artist: Derrick Velasquez
February 27, 2013 by Erin Fletcher
Derrick Velasquez has created these magnificent sculptures by simply offsetting strips of colorful vinyl into a massive stack. The overall shape of the piece is directed by the wooden post at the base of each vinyl pile. I love this work because of its simplicity and elegance, plus some pieces seem to defy a sense of balance.
In a correspondence with the artist, Derrick told me about his past as an amateur bookbinder! The vinyl strips in these sculptures are actually scraps leftover from the softcover journals he use to make. Fantastic, thanks for sharing Derrick.

Artist: Valerie Hammond
February 27, 2013 by Erin Fletcher
The work of Valerie Hammond is so delicate and lovely and shrouded in mystery. I especially love her sculpture work, it reminds me so much of the earlier sculpture work of artist Petah Coyne. Valerie draws from her great fascination and mystery of ancient religious visuals from Tibetan medical drawings to Buddhist sculptures; working across various mediums from painting to printmaking to photography.
