  1. Artist: Shaun Kardinal

It should come to no surprise that I love the work of Shaun Kardinal, who so wonderfully combines my two favorite materials into his art: thread and paper.  Shaun applies thread with calculated precision, embroidering symmetrical patterns over collaged ephemera. His pieces are incredibly affordable as well, so be sure to stop by his shop.connotation29_shaunkardinal connotation38_shaunkardinal connotation36_shaunkardinal connotation37_shaunkardinal

Shaun also offers the series Alterations, a collection of altered vintage postcards:

  2. Artists: AMTK

Andrew Mazorol and Tynan Kerr act as the duo AMTK, who together bring a blend of whimsy to their paintings with a bold color palette and strong imposing patterns. With each painting there is a sense of puzzlement, inviting the view to witness the customs and rituals of a bizarre culture.

These whimsical portraits from Stacey Page seem to capture any hidden desires of the subject, whom wear their superhero guise so proudly. Her embroidered work is exceptional, carefully sewn through small-scale photographs.

  4. Photographer: Alma Haser

I’m amazed as to how artists continually reinvent the Portrait. In the series Cosmic Surgery, photographer Alma Haser captures confounding imagery. After the initial portrait is taken, the image is reprinted several times and folded into a complicated origami structure. This modular structure is then strategically placed over the face and the portrait is rephotographed leaving the subject feeling more alien than familiar.

Simply put, artist Hagar Vardimon-van Heummen proclaims ‘love paper, love thread and adore the combination.’ In this lovely series titled Lonely HousesHagar expands from the familiar to extraordinary works of art. I particularly love how the angle of the thread mutually competes with the angles of the structures.

Chris Duncan paints such blazing and brilliant shapes of color amassed into circles, diamonds and starbursts. His inclusion of colorful dots shine like candy or crystals. Chris employs a wide variety of materials in his work, from photos to string to mirrors and light, all as a means to investigate perception and balance through repetition and reflection.

There are a million reasons to love artist Alexander Kori Girard. One being his radiant combinations of color mingling together to create irregular symmetrical patterns. I may find inspiration in his work for a future book cover or two!

I am in love with Mark Warren Jacques. If I could, I would have included all his work on my blog, so you have to promise to check out his tumblr. As a visual exploration of life’s little oddities Mark paints good vibes with bursts of colorful sun rays, vein-like trees against black spaces and endless oceans of mesmerizing waves.
