The collage work of Virginia Echeverria Whipple is awesome! Each piece feels like a still from a wild dream; confetti rain, spaces slowing collapsing inward, floating abstract shapes, cheetahs covered in fresco!

Artist: Randy Grskovic
February 6, 2013 by Erin Fletcher
Randy Grskovic transforms our perception of reality through his collaged work. Instilling humor, beauty and mystery into familiar imagery: landscapes, family portraits and candid photographs. Memory is tricky, when we recall a moment in our history holes appear in the story, so we use imagery as a guide. Through his work, Randy explores what can happen when this documentation is lost, how will we remember?

Photographer: Daniel Kukla
February 6, 2013 by Erin Fletcher
Photographer Daniel Kukla carried a large mirror and painter’s easel into the wilderness of southern California’s Joshua Tree National Park to capture the elements of the environment. Inspiration came as Daniel hiked through the desert capturing glimpses of where the Sonoran meets the Mojave; at the border of these two deserts emerges a distinct opposition of ecosystems known as the Edge Effect. Through his appropriately titled series The Edge Effect, Daniel creates a single portrait which unifies the two landscapes.

Artist: Clare Grill

These stunning paintings from Clare Grill excite movement with each brushstroke. The dull color palette and aged appearance of each piece suggests they might be a fragment to an ancient artifact; a link to some grander story.

Inspired by the shapes in traditional American quilts, Lena Wolff collages each piece with paper and hand-cut painted pieces of watercolor and gouache or simply designs them with pencil. Tigers, UFOs, faceless beings, oh my! The work of Matias Santa Maria is quite fantastical as he collides nature, cosmology and the presence of man in his highly stylized and colorful paintings.

I’m Not There is an ongoing series from Barcelona based photographer PoL Úbeda Hervàs. These photographs are absolutely brilliant and haunting at the same time. An excerpt about the piece in the artist’s words: “I am changing at this very moment of my life. I do not react in the same ways I used to. I am surprised. Is that me? These pictures are the way I see myself now.”

My heart swoons for the work of Mario Kolaric. In his series, Diary Fragments, Mario takes pen to paper as a daily exercise, allowing his moods and emotions to flow into each piece. I love the abstract quality of each drawing; appearing like a topographic survey of the mind.

There are so many wonderful elements coming together in the sculpture work of Matt Wedel: dripping color, floral blooms atop plump foundations, irregular rocky structures and the glossy finish of ceramic; making each piece a captivating object.

Artist: Claire Falkenberg
January 24, 2013 by Erin Fletcher
There is something frustrating yet mystifying about the work of Claire Falkenberg. Massive hazy orbs appear almost illuminated and purposefully obstruct our full perspective, allowing only subtle hints of what may lie beneath. I feel compelled to stare, as if my gaze will break through the barrier revealing the hidden imagery.
