Number 4 on my Life List is to embroider a self portrait, so you can image my excitement when I was introduced to the work of Cayce Zavaglia! Trained in painting, Cayce utilizes her background to embroider these painstakingly realistic portraits from wool and silk thread. Check out the video below to see her process.

Thread is such a simple, common place object; lately, I’ve been enjoying the abundance of artist and crafters who have been pushing the limits of this versatile material. Anne Lindberg has been using thread to create linear drawings, ominous installations and massive sculptures. Her installation pieces appear to float in space as they freely pass through the gallery walls.

Artist Anne ten Donkelaar uses a lovely mix of materials: colored and grayscale printed floral images, embroidery floss, twigs and butterfly wings to create complex floral constructions and mended butterflies. Through collage Anne gives life to various exotic plants and lands aid to butterflies with broken wings through assorted means of flight.

Symmetry and repetition compose circular forms that lure your gaze with familiarity, yet leaning inward could arouse feelings of bewilderment.

Lauren DiCioccio is an amazing embroiderer and sculptor, her series sewnnews applies unusual colors and shapes in a painterly way to bring new life to the familiar aesthetic of the newspaper. She uses the same process with other objects both antiquated and common.
